Dog Training and Obedience for the Frustrated Owner
As a new dog owner and trainer, you may find yourself feeling frustrated. This can be discouraging. It is quite common and shows a concern for your pets happiness and well being. However, there are some things you should know about dog training and obedience.
At the end of a long day, you are exhausted, the dog just doesn’t seem to be responding. Tempers can begin to flare quite easily. You may decide that your dog just can't be trained or that you just don’t have the required skills. You might be feeling completely discouraged by a the lack of interest your dog is showing. The training of the most simple of behaviors becomes stressful. You will probably encounter this more than a few times while training your dog. Just take this frustration as a queue that the training is done for the time being. Immediately retire to some less strenuous amusement such as a watching tv or reading a book. Dogs are sometimes like children and will find ways to irritate you to amuse themselves. Dogs take time and patience in teaching anything worth training them for just like children. Try to keep in mind that your dog will not become a champion overnight. Try to be as patient as you possibly can and do not let yourself become to frustrated or discouraged. Dogs should be rewarded for doing a behavior or trick correctly. This is a very important. It builds your relationship with your pet. It also shows them you appreciate their good behaviors. Remember to be consistent. This is one of the most important aspects in dog training and obedience. A reward should be given every time performance of a given command is executed correctly. This is not saying to give your dog only food treats every time. While an occasional tidbit of food is a great reward, doing this too consistently is not. This could result in you pet becoming unhealthy and be counterproductive to your training efforts. Instead, offer other forms of reward such as verbal praise, play with a favorite toy with your dog pet him to show affection. These rewards will enhance your relationship with your pet and make future training sessions easier.
